Bhattarai leads stakeholders to hand over memo on Budhigandaki to PM
Former prime minister and coordinator of Naya Shakti Baburam Bhattarai led a delegation of the Budhigandaki Hydropower Project National Stakeholders Committee to hand over a 12-point memorandum letter about the project to PM Sher Bahadur Deuba on Sunday.
The memorandum letter, submitted to Deuba at the latter's office in Singha Durbar, has raised the issue of resettlement and compensation to the locals of Gorkha and Dhading districts who will be displaced due to construction of the reservoir for the 1200 MW reservoir-based project.
The letter also expresses concerns over the government's decision to hand over the project to controversial China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC) that has a very bad record in completion of projects in Nepal. Pointing that granting of the project to CGGC has been opposed in the parliament and even on the streets, the letter also asks the government to clarify to the project-affected people whether issues like shares, employment and the rights of the affected people will be guaranteed or not.
Bhattarai had also submitted a 13-point memorandum letter about the project to PM Deuba on July 7 demanding annulment of the government's decision to hand over the project to CGGC.
The Pushpa Kamal Dahal government on June 4 had signed agreement with the Chinese company to develop the 1200 MW project on engineering, procurement, construction and finance (EPCF) model.
