Election cannot be postponed: EC to PM
The Election Commission (EC) Thursday has said that second round of local election scheduled for June 28 cannot be postponed.
During the meeting that held at the Prime Minister's Office in Singha Durbar Thursday morning, EC officials clarified that the Phase II election cannot be deferred.
"The Commission has already moved the election process forward for holding the election," said Election Commissioner Ila Sharma.
"We've informed PM Sher Bahadur Deuba that the election cannot be deferred. We've discussed on election date," she added.
"The local election should not be postponed as the provincial and federal election should be held within January 2018, said Chief Election Commissioner Dr Ayodhi Prasad Yadav during the meeting.
PM Deuba on June 13 had proposed postponement of local election in provinces 2 and 5 to accommodate agitating Rastriya Janata Pary-Nepal.
RJP-N is adamant it will not participate in second round of polls scheduled for June 28 if the constitution were not amended and number of local units not added in tarai in proportion to the population there.
The agitating party Tuesday had started protest programs including general strike to disrupt the local election. Normal life in the districts of province no. 2 has remained affected from past three days due to general strike.
